We carry the old water heater up and out once it's disconnected

We take out old water heaters, gas or electric, once they've been disconnected, and we're the ones carrying a tank that heavy up the basement stairs. Most of a water heater is steel, so it comes out of the load and goes to scrap metal recycling instead of to the transfer station.

How We Handle It

Send us a photo of the tank and one looking up the stairs, and you get a price before we start. We do all of the carrying and hauling. If a plumber is putting in the new one, ask them to disconnect the old one and leave it for us.

What We Take: Water Heater Removal

We take tank water heaters, gas and electric, along with the old expansion tank and the pipe and fittings that came off with them. A heat pump water heater holds refrigerant, so it's handled the way a fridge is, at a facility set up to recover it, and quoted on its own. If the rest of the basement is going too, we take it on the same visit.

What Sets the Price on Water Heater Removal

A water heater usually lands at or near our $120 minimum, because one tank is a small share of a truck that holds 20 cubic yards. What moves the number is the carry. A tank in a garage or a utility room off the driveway is the short version. A 50-gallon tank coming up a narrow basement stairway with a turn at the bottom takes more hands and more time, and that raises the price. Send a photo of the tank and the stairs, and you get a number before anyone drives over, then we confirm it in person before we start.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $70 to $100 per cubic yard
  • Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Water Heater Removal FAQs

Do I need to disconnect the water heater first?

Yes. Once the tank is disconnected and safe to touch, we carry it out and haul it away. Anything hardwired has to be unwired, a gas unit needs a licensed plumber to cap the line, and the water and power should be off before we get there.

Does the tank need to be drained?

It's a lot easier if it is, because a tank with water still in it weighs far more than an empty one. If it hasn't been drained, tell us when you book so we come ready for it.

How much does water heater removal cost?

A single tank usually comes in at or close to our $120 minimum. A heat pump unit holds refrigerant, so that handling is quoted on its own line, and either way you get the number before we start.

Can you get it up the basement stairs?

Yes. Carrying heavy things up basement stairs is a normal day for us. We move carefully, pad the tight corners and carry the tank rather than drag it.

What happens to the old tank?

The steel tank goes to a scrap metal recycler with the old pipe and fittings.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.

What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

We give a single couch the same care as a full estate cleanout. Families and businesses around Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, and Marblehead have left us 350+ five-star reviews.

The Junk Heroes is an independent company that two brothers built and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we stand behind every job we do.
