Exercise Equipment Removal in Salem & the North Shore
We remove treadmills, home gyms, racks and plates, and we take them apart on site. We're brother-owned, locally operated, and open 24/7, and we work in Salem, Swampscott, Marblehead and 38 more towns on the North Shore and in Middlesex and Suffolk counties.
We carry treadmills and home gyms out of basements
A treadmill built in the basement does not come back up in one piece, so it has to come apart first. It is the same story with an elliptical, an exercise bike, a rower, a home gym system, a squat rack, a weight bench, or the dumbbells and plates stacked next to all of it. We take the whole list, and we take it apart where it sits. You do not need to unbolt anything before we get there, you do not need to drag it out to the driveway, and you do not have to find a second person to help you lift it.
How We Handle It
The stairs are what make this job hard, more than the weight. On a treadmill the console and the deck come off first, and what goes up the stairs is two or three parts we can turn on a landing instead of one long machine that jams at the first corner. On a home gym the cables come off and the weight stack comes out of the tower before the frame moves at all. On a rack the plates come off the pegs, then the uprights come off the base. It leaves in pieces and the pieces go straight onto the truck. The metal comes out of the load on the way: steel frames, racks, uprights, benches, plates and dumbbells are all scrap, and scrap goes to Turner Inc in Lynn rather than the transfer station. There are two things to sort out before the day. Leave it assembled and just unplug it. Loose parts and bolts are harder to carry out than the machine. And if a rack or a wall-mounted unit is lagged into the studs or bolted into the floor, we will unbolt it, but patching the holes it leaves behind is not part of the job, so plan on a tube of filler and a bit of paint after we go.
"Absolutely would recommend Henrique and Filipe, so nice and professional and came same day for both a quote and the actual removal!! They were careful to pivot things around our existing furniture and walls so as not to scratch or damage anything. Only good things to say!"
"The Junk Heroes are awesome!!! Excellent communication, showed up on time, and worked quickly. They were super careful while removing a heavy, awkward appliance through an old house and they talked to each other throughout the process to make sure nothing was damaged."
"Did a wonderful job from start to finish. Had 2 hospital beds that needed to be dismantled and hauled away. They took great care in moving the pieces throughout my house and getting them on the truck. Pricing was transparent and fair."
"Henrique and his brother were amazing! I texted them at 9 and they were at my house by 10, gave a very reasonable estimate (for free) and had all my junk gone by 10:30. They were incredibly professional and courteous. I will 100% call them again!!!"
"Absolutely recommend!!! Excellent communication, very polite, and clear pricing. These guys WANT TO WORK, flexible and patient as our plans kept shifting. My dad has dementia and they were incredibly sensitive to our situation. We really appreciated that!"
"Absolutely awesome experience with Junk Heroes! Professional, friendly, efficient, and incredibly quick. They showed up on time and made the whole junk-removal process painless. Moving out of an apartment is stressful enough, so a crew that takes pride in the work was huge."
What We Take: Exercise Equipment Removal
We take treadmills, ellipticals, exercise and spin bikes, rowers, stair climbers, home gym towers and cable machines, squat racks and power cages, benches, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, plate trees and the plates on them, heavy bags and their stands, and the rubber mats under all of it. Gym flooring goes too, and it is bulkier than people expect once it is rolled, so mention it when you book rather than after we have measured the rest. We don't have a donation outlet for exercise equipment, so even a machine that still works is taken apart and its steel goes to scrap.
What Sets the Price on Exercise Equipment Removal
A rack of plates takes up little of a truck that holds 20 cubic yards, but it is dense, so weight and access move the number more than the volume does. Meanwhile the machines are bulky and awkward and most of them are downstairs. That is why we ask for the stair count and the width of the narrowest door before quoting rather than after. A garage gym we can wheel out to the truck is the easy end, near the $120 minimum. A basement full of plates and a squat rack, up a turn in the stairs, is the other end, and it needs more hands.
How Much Will This Cost?
Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.
- $120 minimum pickup
- $70 to $100 per cubic yard
- Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach
For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Exercise Equipment Removal FAQs
Do I have to take it apart or move it before you get here?
No. Leave it where it is, leave it assembled, unplug it, and that is the whole list. A treadmill already broken down into a deck, a frame and a bag of hardware is harder for us to carry than the treadmill was, because loose parts need hands that should be on the machine. You do not have to get it to the garage or out to the curb either, and you do not need to line up a friend to help. If you want the job to go faster, clear the path instead: move what is stacked on the stairs, prop the bulkhead open, and tell us when you book whether the stairway has a turn in it, because a turn changes how many of us come.
How does a treadmill or a home gym get out of a basement?
It goes out in pieces, and we do the taking apart. On a treadmill the console and the uprights come off and the deck separates from the frame, so what climbs the stairs is short enough to clear the turn. On a home gym the cables and pulleys come off, the weight stack comes out of the tower, and the frame goes last. On a squat rack the plates come off the pegs, then the uprights come off the base. Dumbbells and plates go up in trips rather than all in one load, because a stack of them together is far heavier than it looks. Nothing gets dragged across your floor and nothing gets slid down the stairs. If the machine is on a second floor instead of a basement, that is the same job in the other direction and it is worth saying when you call.
How much does exercise equipment removal cost?
This is gear that is heavy for the space it takes up, and that is the part that moves the number. Volume work runs $70 to $100 per cubic yard against a truck that holds 20 cubic yards, with a $120 minimum, and closer to $70 when a load is light and easy to reach. Exercise equipment is the opposite of that on both counts, so the weight and the basement carry push it away from the easy end of the range rather than toward it. One treadmill on its own is usually a $120 minimum job. A full home gym, the tower and the rack and the bench and the plates together, is volume. Send a photo of the equipment and a second photo of the path out with the stairs in it, and you get a number before anyone drives over, then we confirm it in person before we start. The pricing page has the rest of the numbers.
Do you donate old exercise equipment, and where does it end up?
Most of a home gym goes to recycling, because most of its weight is steel. Frames, racks, uprights, benches, plates and dumbbells are scrap metal, and scrap goes to Turner Inc in Lynn rather than the transfer station. The rest of a machine, the plastic shrouds, the belt and the electronics in the console, rides out with the load. The one thing I won't promise is donation: we don't have a donation outlet for exercise equipment. If the equipment is one part of a bigger clearout, say so when you call and we'll quote the whole basement cleanout or garage cleanout on one visit instead of coming out twice.
Our Mission Beyond the Job
We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.
What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.
