Basketball Hoop Removal in Salem & the North Shore
We take basketball hoops down, drain or dig out the base, and haul the whole thing off. We're brother-owned, locally operated, and open 24/7, and we work in Salem, Swampscott, Marblehead and 38 more towns on the North Shore and in Middlesex and Suffolk counties.
We take portable hoops and poles set in concrete
There are two kinds of basketball hoop, and the work is completely different. A portable hoop stands on a base filled with water or sand, and nothing moves while that base is full, so emptying it is the first thing we do on site: the water gets drained out, the sand gets shoveled out. Then the backboard comes off, then the pole, then the empty base, and the whole thing leaves in pieces on the same visit. An in-ground hoop is a pole set in concrete, and there you have a choice. We can cut the pole off at grade so nothing is left standing, or dig the footing out with the pole still in it so there is nothing left under the lawn either. You do not need to drain it, unbolt it, or dig at it before we get there.
How We Handle It
Where it all goes afterwards is straightforward. The pole, the rim and the hardware are metal, and the metal comes out of the load on the way: scrap goes to Turner Inc in Lynn rather than the transfer station. The backboard comes down first, before the pole moves at all, because a full sheet of acrylic or glass still bolted to the top of a pole is the part of this job that goes wrong, and the backboard leaves with the load. There is one caveat. A hoop bolted to a garage wall or to the roof edge can come down where it is safe to reach it, but we do not patch the wall or the roof afterwards, so plan on the lag holes, the filler and the paint being your end of it. And anything structural is a demolition contractor's job rather than ours. On price, a hoop on its own is usually a $120 minimum job, and the two things that move that number are the sand in a portable base and a concrete footing dug out of the ground, both priced by weight rather than by the cubic yard.
"Great job demolishing and removing my shed. Excellent communication, fair price and friendly service. The trifecta of any business!"
"Absolutely recommend!!! Excellent communication, very polite, and clear pricing. These guys WANT TO WORK, flexible and patient as our plans kept shifting. My dad has dementia and they were incredibly sensitive to our situation. We really appreciated that!"
"Absolutely awesome experience with Junk Heroes! Professional, friendly, efficient, and incredibly quick. They showed up on time and made the whole junk-removal process painless. Moving out of an apartment is stressful enough, so a crew that takes pride in the work was huge."
"Junk Heroes did an amazing job with our junk removal in Saugus, Massachusetts. They arrived on time, worked fast, and completely cleared out a porch that was packed with junk, boxes, and old items. The before-and-after difference was amazing."
"The Junk Heroes are awesome!!! Excellent communication, showed up on time, and worked quickly. They were super careful while removing a heavy, awkward appliance through an old house and they talked to each other throughout the process to make sure nothing was damaged."
"Absolutely would recommend Henrique and Filipe, so nice and professional and came same day for both a quote and the actual removal!! They were careful to pivot things around our existing furniture and walls so as not to scratch or damage anything. Only good things to say!"
What We Take: Basketball Hoop Removal
The whole hoop leaves on one visit: the backboard, the rim and the net, the pole sections, the mounting hardware, and either the base or the footing depending on which kind you have. Sand out of a portable base goes with us, and so does the concrete footing if we dig it out, and that concrete goes to a local recycling center to be crushed and used again rather than buried. If the hoop is coming down as part of clearing the yard, the old net posts, a trampoline frame and whatever else is out there can go on the same truck, which costs less than two visits.
What Sets the Price on Basketball Hoop Removal
Beyond the base and the footing, the thing that changes this job is where the hoop actually stands. A pole at the top of a driveway with the truck twenty feet away is the short version. A hoop at the back of the property, behind a gate we cannot get a barrow through, means the pole sections and the backboard get carried the length of the yard, and a footing dug out back there gets carried the same way. Send a photo from the street looking at the hoop, so we can see the carry as well as the hoop, and you get a number before anyone drives over, then we confirm it in person before we start.
How Much Will This Cost?
Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.
- $120 minimum pickup
- $70 to $100 per cubic yard
- Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach
For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Basketball Hoop Removal FAQs
Mine is the portable kind with a base. Do I have to empty it first?
No, that part is ours. A portable base is filled with water or with sand, and a full one is far too heavy to tip or drag, so emptying it on site is the first thing we do. Water gets drained out, sand gets shoveled out, and once the base is light the backboard comes off, then the pole, then the base itself, and all of it goes on the truck the same visit. You do not tip it, drain it, or get it out to the driveway ahead of us. The one thing worth saying when you call is which of the two is in there, because sand is heavy material and it changes the number.
The pole is set in concrete. Does the footing have to come out?
That is your call, and both ways are normal. We can cut the pole off at grade, which leaves the footing in the ground with nothing standing above it, or we can dig the footing out with the pole still in it so there is nothing left under the lawn either. Digging it out is the bigger job, and concrete is heavy, so that part is priced by weight instead of by volume, the same way concrete removal is. Mention the footing when you ask for your quote so we bring the right equipment.
Ours is bolted to the garage. Can you take that one down?
Usually yes, where it is safe to reach it. The backboard comes off the bracket first, then the bracket and the lag bolts come off the wall or the roof edge, and the bracket and the hardware are metal, so they go to Turner Inc in Lynn with the rest of the scrap off the job. What we do not do is patch afterwards. The lag holes stay where they are, and the siding, the trim or the shingles around them are left as they were when the bracket came off, so plan on filler and paint being your end of it after we go. If the mount is carrying anything structural, that is a demolition contractor's job rather than ours, and we will say so on the phone rather than on the day.
How much does basketball hoop removal cost?
A hoop on its own, portable or cut off at grade, is usually a $120 minimum job. Past that it is volume like everything else we haul, $70 to $100 per cubic yard against a truck that holds 20 cubic yards, and closer to $70 when the load is light and we can walk straight to it, which a hoop in an open driveway generally is. The two parts priced by weight rather than by the yard are the sand out of a portable base and a concrete footing dug out of the ground, so say which base you have when you send the photo and it is in the number from the start. If the hoop is going because the kids are grown and you are clearing the yard, tell us and we will quote the swing set on the same visit instead of coming out twice.
Our Mission Beyond the Job
We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.
What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.
