Scrap Metal Pickup in Salem & the North Shore
We pick up scrap metal, and you don't have to sort it or drag it out to the curb. We're brother-owned, locally operated, and open 24/7, and we work in Salem, Swampscott, Marblehead and 38 more towns on the North Shore and in Middlesex and Suffolk counties.
We haul scrap metal, rusted or not
Scrap usually comes as a mix of pieces, like a swing set frame or a radiator in the cellar. The list of what counts is longer than most people expect: swing set and above-ground pool frames, metal bed frames, filing cabinets, radiators, storm doors, gutters, lengths of pipe, steel shelving, grills, lawn mowers and the rest of the lawn equipment, and appliances. If it is mostly metal it is scrap, and it does not matter whether it is rusted through or still looks new. You do not have to sort it, strip the plastic and wood off it, or drag it out to the curb before we get there, because the sorting happens on our end once the truck is loaded. We take one radiator or a whole garage with a radiator buried at the back of it.
How We Handle It
Most of these are short jobs. You point at it, we carry it out, and nothing has to come apart first unless the thing is wider than the door it has to go through, in which case we cut it down where it stands. The part worth knowing is where it goes afterwards: scrap metal goes to Turner Inc in Lynn rather than the transfer station. That is where the metal off every job we run ends up, not something we arrange only when somebody asks. This is a removal service, and the price works the way it does on every other load we haul: the $120 minimum, then $70 to $100 per cubic yard for the room it takes up in the truck, and closer to $70 when the load is light and we can walk straight to it. Metal is heavy for the space it fills, so weight and access move the number here more than they do on a load of boxes, and we tell you the number before anything moves. Two things sit outside the ordinary load. Anything holding refrigerant, such as fridges, freezers and AC units, is handled separately. And we do not take anything leaking or still smoldering, on a scrap job or any other, which means a drum or can of unknown liquid, a fuel tank that is leaking, or debris from a fire that has not fully cooled.
"Absolutely would recommend Henrique and Filipe, so nice and professional and came same day for both a quote and the actual removal!! They were careful to pivot things around our existing furniture and walls so as not to scratch or damage anything. Only good things to say!"
"The Junk Heroes are awesome!!! Excellent communication, showed up on time, and worked quickly. They were super careful while removing a heavy, awkward appliance through an old house and they talked to each other throughout the process to make sure nothing was damaged."
"Did a wonderful job from start to finish. Had 2 hospital beds that needed to be dismantled and hauled away. They took great care in moving the pieces throughout my house and getting them on the truck. Pricing was transparent and fair."
"Henrique and his brother were amazing! I texted them at 9 and they were at my house by 10, gave a very reasonable estimate (for free) and had all my junk gone by 10:30. They were incredibly professional and courteous. I will 100% call them again!!!"
"Absolutely recommend!!! Excellent communication, very polite, and clear pricing. These guys WANT TO WORK, flexible and patient as our plans kept shifting. My dad has dementia and they were incredibly sensitive to our situation. We really appreciated that!"
"Absolutely awesome experience with Junk Heroes! Professional, friendly, efficient, and incredibly quick. They showed up on time and made the whole junk-removal process painless. Moving out of an apartment is stressful enough, so a crew that takes pride in the work was huge."
What We Take: Scrap Metal Pickup
Mostly metal is enough, and rust makes no difference. We take swing set and pool frames, metal bed frames, filing cabinets, radiators, storm doors, gutters, pipe and conduit, steel shelving, grills, lawn mowers and the rest of the lawn equipment, bikes, wheels and rims, water heaters, ducting, wire and cable, and appliances. Two things sit outside the ordinary load: anything holding refrigerant, such as fridges, freezers and AC units, and a propane tank, which we do take and quote on its own. With the tank, tell us whether it is empty, because that decides the price.
What Sets the Price on Scrap Metal Pickup
Three things change how long a scrap job takes. The first is how far it is from where the metal sits to where the truck can park, because every piece is carried rather than dragged. The second is whether it is in one place or five. A cellar, a garage, a shed and two spots in the yard is five carries and a walk between each of them. The third is the door, since anything wider than the opening it has to come through gets cut down where it stands, which takes time but saves your frame. Tell us where everything is when you send the photo, not just what it is.
How Much Will This Cost?
Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.
- $120 minimum pickup
- $70 to $100 per cubic yard
- Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach
For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Scrap Metal Pickup FAQs
What counts as scrap metal, and do I have to sort it?
If it is mostly metal, we take it as scrap. The ones we get called for over and over are old swing set frames and above-ground pool frames, metal bed frames, filing cabinets, radiators, storm doors, gutters, lengths of pipe, steel shelving, grills, lawn mowers and the rest of the lawn equipment, and appliances. You do not sort it, you do not pull the plastic seat or the wood top off it, and you do not get it to the curb. We separate the metal out after the truck is loaded, so you do not have to. If the metal is one layer of a bigger pile, say so when you call and we will quote the whole garage cleanout or basement cleanout on one visit instead of coming out twice.
How much does scrap metal pickup cost?
It's priced the same way as every other load we haul, by the room it takes up in the truck. Volume work runs $70 to $100 per cubic yard against a truck that holds 20 cubic yards, with a $120 minimum, and closer to $70 when a load is light and easy to reach. A swing set frame or a few gutters off the side of the house is usually light and quick and lands at the easy end. Metal is dense though, so a pile that looks small can weigh more than it measures, and weight and a long carry are what push the number up from there. For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. Send a photo and you get a number before anyone drives over, then we confirm it in person before we start. The pricing page has the rest of the numbers.
Do fridges, freezers and AC units go out with the scrap?
No. We still haul them, but the refrigerant has to be recovered at a separate facility before any of that metal is scrapped, so they are priced apart from the scrap load. The rest of it is on the refrigerator and freezer removal page. Washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and water heaters have no refrigerant in them, so those ride out with the scrap like anything else.
Is there any metal you will not take?
We turn down three things, and they are the same three on every job: asbestos, medical and biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. With metal that means a drum or can of unknown liquid, a fuel tank that is leaking, or debris from a fire that has not fully cooled. That is the whole list. Everything else metal is fair game, rust included, and if we cannot take something we will usually tell you who can. When you are not sure what you have, text a photo instead of guessing, and the full list of what we take covers the rest.
Our Mission Beyond the Job
We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.
What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.
