We help clear the house when it's time to move somewhere smaller

Moving from a family house into a smaller place, an apartment or assisted living usually means deciding what to do with most of a lifetime's worth of things, and that's a lot for anyone. We come and clear out what isn't going to the new place, room by room and at the pace your family sets, and nothing leaves the house until you or your parent has said so.

How We Handle It

It starts with a walkthrough, in person or on a video call if family is out of state, and you get a price before we start. If we quoted it by video, we confirm the number in person before anything moves. Papers, photographs and anything that looks like a record get set aside in a box for the family instead of going on the truck, and things still in good shape are offered for donation first.

What We Take: Senior Downsizing Cleanout

We take whatever isn't making the move: furniture that won't fit in the new place, beds and mattresses, the dining set, kitchenware, clothing, books, an old fridge or freezer, the boxes in the basement and the attic, and the tools and yard equipment in the garage.

The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.

What Sets the Price on Senior Downsizing Cleanout

A downsizing cleanout is priced by how much of the truck it fills, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard against a truck that holds 20, with a $120 minimum, whether it's one room or the whole house. Besides how much is going, the number moves with how many floors things come down, whether the basement and the attic are part of it, and how close the truck can get to the door. When it's done in stages, each visit is quoted on what actually goes that day.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $70 to $100 per cubic yard
  • Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Senior Downsizing Cleanout FAQs

Can you work with our family if we live out of state?

Yes. We can do the walkthrough on a video call and settle what stays and what goes from photos, so nobody has to travel for it.

Can my parent be there while you work?

Yes, and a lot of the time that's the best way to do it. We go at whatever pace works for them, ask before anything leaves the room, and if something turns out to matter, it stays.

Does it all have to go in one visit?

No. Plenty of families spread it over a few visits, so your parent has time with the harder rooms while we clear the easy ones, and you only pay for what goes on each visit.

What happens to furniture and things in good shape?

They're offered for donation first. Usable furniture, kitchenware and clothing go to donation before anything goes to recycling or disposal, though we can't promise where any single piece ends up.

Do we have to pay anything before you start?

A deposit only comes up on a large cleanout, and only once you've said yes to the quote. The walkthrough and the price cost you nothing.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.

What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

We give a single couch the same care as a full estate cleanout. Families and businesses around Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, and Marblehead have left us 350+ five-star reviews.

The Junk Heroes is an independent company that two brothers built and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we stand behind every job we do.

We do this by the book. We carry $2M in general liability, a $1M umbrella policy and $1M in commercial auto coverage. We are USDOT registered (USDOT 8843043), our drivers hold DOT medical cards, and we hold commercial accounts at the disposal facilities we use, so every load ends up where it is supposed to.
