We clear out what the water ruined so the space can start drying

When a basement floods in a storm or a pipe bursts, we come and haul out what the water ruined: wet carpet and padding, soaked furniture, cardboard boxes coming apart, rugs and whatever was stored on the floor. Getting it out quickly matters, because wet things get worse the longer they sit, and an empty room dries out a lot faster than a full one.

How We Handle It

Call or text and tell us what happened and where, and send photos if you can. On the day, we roll up the wet carpet and bag it in the room it came out of, which keeps the water and the smell from following us through the house. We carry everything else out rather than drag it across floors that are already wet.

What We Take: Flood & Water Damage Cleanout

We take wet carpet and padding, water-damaged furniture, soggy cardboard and whatever was inside it, rugs, clothing and the things that were stored on the floor. If a contractor has already pulled out the wet drywall and insulation, that goes too. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler when it will accept them, because Massachusetts banned them from the trash in November 2022, and each one carries its own fee. MassDEP's FAQ on that ban, which we read in October 2026, says a mattress that is wet or moldy should not be sent for recycling, so a soaked mattress goes to disposal instead. Anything holding refrigerant, like a basement fridge or a dehumidifier, is handled on its own. We can't touch asbestos, so if the wrap on the old pipes or the floor tile might be asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor has to look at it first, and if the water came from a sewage backup, a remediation company has to clean up before we come in.

The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.

What Sets the Price on Flood & Water Damage Cleanout

A flood cleanout is priced like any other load, by how much of the truck it fills, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard against a truck that holds 20, with a $120 minimum. Two things push it up. Water makes everything heavier, so wet carpet, soaked furniture and waterlogged boxes weigh far more than the same things dry, and that extra weight raises the price, the same as on any heavy load. And when the water is in a basement, the stairs and the bulkhead decide how long the carry takes. Photos of the room and one looking up the stairs are enough to give you a number before anyone drives over.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $70 to $100 per cubic yard
  • Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Flood & Water Damage Cleanout FAQs

How fast can you come after a flood?

We can often come the same day, but we can't promise it, so call or text as soon as you can and send photos. We're open 24/7, and a real person on our team picks up.

Do you take wet and moldy things?

Yes. Soaked carpet, water-damaged furniture, soggy boxes and musty rugs are normal work for us, and so is surface mold on stored things.

What about a sewage backup?

If the water came from a sewage backup, a remediation company has to clean the space first, because that's a health hazard we're not set up to handle. Once they've cleared it, we can haul away what's left.

Should I take photos for my insurance?

Yes, and take them before we load anything. Photograph the damage and the things that were ruined, because once they're on the truck they're gone. We're happy to wait while you finish.

How much does a flood cleanout cost?

It's priced by volume with a $120 minimum, the same as any load, but water makes everything heavier and weight counts too, so a soaked basement costs more than the same room dry. Send photos of the room and the stairs and you get a number, then we confirm it in person before we start.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.

What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

We give a single couch the same care as a full estate cleanout. Families and businesses around Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, and Marblehead have left us 350+ five-star reviews.

The Junk Heroes is an independent company that two brothers built and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we stand behind every job we do.

We do this by the book. We carry $2M in general liability, a $1M umbrella policy and $1M in commercial auto coverage. We are USDOT registered (USDOT 8843043), our drivers hold DOT medical cards, and we hold commercial accounts at the disposal facilities we use, so every load ends up where it is supposed to.
