We empty the unit so you can hand back the key

We clear out storage units of any size, fast, for facility managers stuck with an abandoned locker and for renters who are downsizing and done paying for the space every month. We empty it and sweep it out, and you hand back the key.

How We Handle It

Anything still usable goes for donation, what can be recycled goes to recycling, and the rest goes to disposal. The price you agree to before we start is the price you pay.

What We Take: Storage Unit Cleanout

What comes out of a unit is furniture, mattresses, boxes, clothing, holiday decorations, tools, bikes, exercise equipment, televisions and small appliances. We take all of it, and anything still usable is offered for donation first. If the unit has been sitting a long time, expect damp cardboard and a smell, and neither is a problem for us.

The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.

What Sets the Price on Storage Unit Cleanout

Storage units are some of the easiest loads to quote, because the unit size tells us most of it and there is no staircase. A 5 by 10 packed to the roof and a 10 by 20 half full are different jobs, so send a photo from the door rather than telling us the number on the door. The load is priced by the space it takes up in the truck, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard with a $120 minimum, and a light unit on a drive-up row runs closer to $70 a yard. An interior unit at the end of a corridor with one freight elevator is the slower version, so tell us which one you have.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $70 to $100 per cubic yard
  • Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Storage Unit Cleanout FAQs

How does a storage unit cleanout work?

Meet us at the facility or arrange access with the office, point at what goes, and we clear the unit to the walls. Most units are emptied in a single visit.

How much does it cost to clear a storage unit?

It depends on how full the unit is. A lightly filled 5x10 lands near our $120 minimum, while a packed 10x20 fills more truck. Send photos and we'll quote it, then confirm the number on site, before you stop paying that monthly bill.

Do you handle abandoned units for facility managers?

Yes, we work with storage facilities on abandoned and auctioned units, clearing them quickly so the space can be re-rented.

What happens to the stuff from my unit?

We handle it the same way as every job: usable items go for donation first, recyclables go to recycling, and only what's left goes to disposal.

Do we need to be there while you empty it?

No, as long as the facility will let us in. The usual version is that you clear it with the office, we are put on the access list or given a gate code, and you get photos of the empty unit when we are done. If there is anything in there you want kept, mark it or tell us where it is, because once we are working there is nobody standing beside us to ask.

Can you get it done before the end of the month so we stop paying rent?

That is most of why people call, and we are open 24 hours a day, so a Sunday or an evening at the end of the month is normal work for us rather than a favor. Call or text and we will tell you straight what we can fit in. Monday to Saturday between 8am and 5pm we usually reply within 5 minutes.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.

What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

We give a single couch the same care as a full estate cleanout. Families and businesses around Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, and Marblehead have left us 350+ five-star reviews.

The Junk Heroes is an independent company that two brothers built and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we stand behind every job we do.

We do this by the book. We carry $2M in general liability, a $1M umbrella policy and $1M in commercial auto coverage. We are USDOT registered (USDOT 8843043), our drivers hold DOT medical cards, and we hold commercial accounts at the disposal facilities we use, so every load ends up where it is supposed to.
