We clear out the apartment and carry everything down for you

We clear out apartments and condos, from a few leftover pieces to a full unit. It's for people moving out who ran out of time or room on the moving truck, and for landlords and property managers who need a unit ready for the next tenant. Filipe, the crew and I do all of the lifting and carry everything down the stairs or the elevator to the truck, and we sweep up the rooms we cleared before we leave.

How We Handle It

You can text us photos of each room, or one of us can come walk the apartment with you, and either way you get the price before we start. When we quote from photos, we confirm the number against what we find before anything is loaded, and it doesn't change after that. On the day, we take everything that's going, including what's in the closets, the kitchen cabinets and the building's storage space if the unit has one, and anything still usable goes for donation before the rest goes for recycling or disposal. If your lease asks for a professional cleaning when you leave, the cleaner can come in right after us.

What We Take: Apartment Cleanout

What's left in an apartment at the end of a move is usually the furniture that didn't fit on the moving truck, a bed and its mattress, a couch, a desk, the kitchen table and chairs, a window air conditioner or a mini fridge, bags of clothes and trash, kitchenware, and whatever was pushed to the back of the closets. We take all of it, and we take apart a bed frame or a wardrobe that won't fit through the door in one piece. If we can't take something, we'll usually tell you who can.

The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.

What Sets the Price on Apartment Cleanout

An apartment cleanout is priced by volume, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard against a truck that holds 20, with a $120 minimum, and the number is set by how much is going and how far it has to be carried to the truck. A ground-floor unit with the truck parked at the door is the quickest version of this job. A fourth-floor walk-up, or a building where the elevator has to be booked and the truck has to park around the corner, is the same volume and a longer day. If the building has its own rules about moving hours, elevator bookings or an insurance certificate, send them over when you book and we'll work to them.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $70 to $100 per cubic yard
  • Closer to $70 when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes bring the minimum down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. The minimum can also be higher for a job well outside our normal routes. See the full pricing page.

Apartment Cleanout FAQs

Can you clear the apartment on the day I move out?

We often can, but same-day pickup isn't guaranteed, so call or text as soon as you know your move-out date and we'll get you on the schedule. If your lease ends at a set time, tell us that too and we'll plan the day around it.

Do I need to be there while you work?

You don't need to be, as long as we can get in. If you've already moved out, you can leave a key with the building manager or give us a lockbox code, and we'll call you to confirm the price against what we find before anything is loaded.

How much does an apartment cleanout cost?

It's priced by volume with a $120 minimum, so a few pieces left behind cost much less than a full one-bedroom. Text us photos of each room and we'll give you a number, which we confirm on site before we start, and it doesn't change after that.

Will you take apart furniture that won't fit through the door?

Yes, we take apart bed frames, wardrobes and anything else that won't fit through the door or down the stairs in one piece, and we bring our own tools to do it.

Do you clear units for landlords and property managers?

Yes, we clear units between tenants, and we can do the apartment, the basement storage and anything left by the dumpster in the same visit. If the unit is being cleared after an eviction, that's our eviction cleanout service, and Massachusetts has rules about a tenant's belongings that you'll want to follow before we start.

What happens to the things that still work?

Anything still usable goes for donation first, what can't be donated is recycled wherever a facility will take it, and only what's left goes for disposal.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.

What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

We give a single couch the same care as a full estate cleanout. Families and businesses around Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, and Marblehead have left us 350+ five-star reviews.

The Junk Heroes is an independent company that two brothers built and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we stand behind every job we do.

We do this by the book. We carry $2M in general liability, a $1M umbrella policy and $1M in commercial auto coverage. We are USDOT registered (USDOT 8843043), our drivers hold DOT medical cards, and we hold commercial accounts at the disposal facilities we use, so every load ends up where it is supposed to.
