What We Take: Full Estate Cleanout
An estate load is everything a house holds: furniture, mattresses, rugs, clothing, kitchenware, books and paper, tools and yard equipment out of the garage, paint, stain and motor oil off the basement shelf, boxes out of the attic, and the appliances if they are going too. Anything still usable is offered for donation first, which on the North Shore usually means Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston or The Salvation Army.
The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.
What Sets the Price on Full Estate Cleanout
A full house is priced the same way a single couch is, by how much of the truck it fills, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard against a truck that holds 20 cubic yards. What changes an estate quote is the shape of the house rather than its square footage: how many floors the load has to come down, whether there is a basement and an attic in it as well, how close the truck can get to the door, and how much of the work is sorting rather than loading. A walkthrough on site is the honest way to price one of these, and for a family handling it from out of state we will do that walkthrough on video instead.
How Much Will This Cost?
Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

How does an estate cleanout work?
We start with a walkthrough, in person or by video, then give you a quote. If we quoted it by video, we confirm the number on site before anything moves. From there we work at your pace, sorting keepsakes, donations, and disposal with patience and respect.
Do you require a deposit for an estate cleanout?
We only ask for one on large cleanouts, and only after you've accepted the quote. You'll never be asked to put money down just to get a price from us.
Can you work with realtors, real estate agents, attorneys, or family out of state?
Yes, we regularly coordinate with executors, estate attorneys, realtors, and real estate agents, and can handle everything by phone, photo, and video if you can't be there in person.
What happens to my loved one's belongings?
Donation comes first. Furniture, clothing and household items go to local charities whenever possible. We treat every estate the way we'd want our own family's home treated.
Can you do the house in stages rather than all at once?
Yes, and a lot of families do it that way. We can clear the rooms nobody is arguing over first, leave the ones that need sorting, and come back when you are ready. Each visit is quoted on what actually goes that day rather than on a share of some total agreed at the start, so if you stop after one room, you pay for one room.
What happens to paperwork, photographs and documents you find?
They get set aside, not loaded. Loose paper, photographs, files and anything that looks like a record go into a box for the family rather than onto the truck, and we point them out as we go. If you would rather we did not open anything at all, say so at the start and we will work that way instead, room by room, with you deciding what leaves.
Our Mission Beyond the Job
We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.
What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.
