How We Handle It
We clear the house room by room. Sharps, medical waste and other biohazard material are among the few things we can't take, so a specialist has to remove those first. Anything still usable goes for donation, and the rest is disposed of properly. Whoever lives there is treated with respect the whole way through.

What We Take: Hoarder Home Cleanout
In a home like this the load is everything the rooms have been holding: bagged and loose household waste, newspapers and mail, clothing, containers and packaging, furniture buried under the rest, spoiled food, appliances, and the mattresses underneath. We take all of it, and we sort as we go, so what is still usable goes for donation and what can be recycled is recycled. If something needs a specialist, we'll usually tell you who can.
The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires, car batteries and propane tanks. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses and box springs go to a mattress recycler whenever it will accept them, TVs and monitors go to an e-waste recycler, and appliances holding refrigerant go to a recycler that recovers the refrigerant. Each of those recyclers charges per item, and we pass that charge on for every piece it accepts. All of these charges come on top of the minimum or the volume price, and we tell you each one and confirm it with you before any work starts. Mattresses, box springs, old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors, and appliances holding refrigerant are disposal-banned in Massachusetts. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smoldering. See everything we take.
What Sets the Price on Hoarder Home Cleanout
There is no honest way to quote one of these from a photo of a doorway, so we come and look, and we do it without an audience if that is easier. The load itself is priced by volume like any other, at $70 to $100 a cubic yard against a truck that holds 20, and what sets the real number is the sorting and the number of trips rather than the rate. Access matters more here than on most jobs, because a stairway or a hallway is often blocked and the first hour goes on making a path out. We quote what we can see on the walkthrough, and once you agree to that number, it doesn't go up.
How Much Will This Cost?
Pricing is based on the space your load takes up in the truck, or on weight for heavy material. We give you a free, firm price in person before any work begins, and once you agree to it, it does not go up.

Will you judge the condition of the home?
No. We do this work with compassion and discretion. Our only goal is getting the home safe and livable again, with dignity for everyone involved.
What if there are important items buried in the clutter?
We sort as we go and set aside documents, photos, cash, jewelry, and anything else that looks important. Nothing valuable gets tossed without you seeing it first.
How long does a hoarder home cleanout take?
It varies with the size of the home and the depth of the clutter. Some take a day, and some take several visits. After a walkthrough we'll give you an honest plan and a firm quote.
Do you require payment upfront?
No. Like all our large cleanouts, a deposit only comes into play after you've accepted the quote, and the price you agree to before we start is the price you pay.
Does any of this get reported to the town or to a landlord?
We don't report anything. What is inside a house is not ours to pass on, and nobody hears it from us. We do not photograph a home for advertising either. The only person we discuss the job with is whoever booked it, and if a family member arranged it and you would rather we spoke only to you, say so and that is how it works.
Will the neighbors know what is going on?
We keep it as private as we can. We park where you tell us to, we load out of sight of the street where the house allows it, and we work at whatever hour suits you, including early morning or late evening, because we are open 24 hours a day. The truck carries our name, so if you would rather it sat around the corner, ask and it will.
Our Mission Beyond the Job
We keep as much out of landfills as we can. We sort through every truckload, and anything still usable that a charity will take goes for donation first, mostly to Big Blue Bargains in Swampscott, More Than Words in Boston and The Salvation Army.
What cannot be donated gets recycled wherever a facility will take it, and whatever is left goes to the disposal facilities we use.

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we wanted to run a junk removal service that showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.
