How Melrose Handles Bulk Items
Melrose runs its curbside bulk pickup through the city's hauler, booked and paid for by phone or in the hauler's app, and it covers wooden furniture, chairs, recliners, dressers, sofas, pullout couches, wooden doors, toilets, carpets and rugs at a price per item. Metal goods and appliances, from stoves and refrigerators to air conditioners, microwaves and dehumidifiers, are a separate paid DPW pickup on Tuesdays. You pay first, call the City Yard to confirm, take the doors off and have the item out by 7 in the morning. Condos and apartment buildings of 6 or more units cannot use the curbside pickup for metal, appliances or electronics.
Mattresses and box springs go to the City Yard on open Saturdays from April to December, paid for ahead on a weekday and sealed in a plastic mattress bag, and futons, bed frames and air or water beds are not part of that program. Getting into the City Yard on Tremont Street takes the city's free vehicle sticker. The city does not pick up large cleanouts after a sale or a death, and it tells homeowners and realtors to hire a private hauler or a dumpster. That is the work we do, whether it is a full estate cleanout or a single room.
We checked each rule above against the official page it links to in October 2026.
