Upright or grand, we haul both out

An upright and a grand are two different jobs, so the first thing I ask is which one it is. An upright goes onto a dolly whole and walks out with enough hands on it to keep it under control, which on a bad staircase means more hands and a set of straps. A grand or a baby grand comes apart before it moves: the lid comes off, then the music desk, the legs, the lyre and the pedal box, and the case goes out on its side. We do the disassembly, all of it, on site. You do not need to take a screw out before we get there, and you do not need to line up help.

Let The Heroes Save Your Day

One thing to know before you call: we haul a piano away. We are not a piano moving company, so if the piano is going to a new address rather than out of the house, that is a mover's job and not ours, and I would rather tell you that now than on the day. Pianos are one of the items we price separately rather than by the cubic yard, the same way the pricing page lists them, and the $120 minimum still applies. You get the number upfront, before any work begins. What sets it is weight and access, which on this job comes down to four things: how many stairs, how many turns the stairway makes, how wide the narrowest doorway on the way out is, and how far it is from the piano to where I can park the truck. Text me a photo of the piano and a second photo of the path out, the door included, and I can give you a number before anyone drives over, then we confirm it in person before we start.

Our Mission Beyond the Job

We care for the environment and are dedicated to keeping the North Shore clean, which is why our mission is to keep as many items as possible out of landfills. To accomplish this we sort through every truck load, and if we see something that can be donated we make sure it gets donated and not dumped.

Items that can't be donated but can still be repurposed get recycled. We partner with local transfer stations to safely dispose of the items left after we donate and recycle.

About Us, Our Story

The Junk Heroes is a brother-owned and operated junk removal company proudly rooted in Salem, MA. We live right on the line between Salem and Swampscott, two minutes from Vinnin Square, and we started this business because we saw a need for a junk removal service that actually showed up on time, treated customers like neighbors, and charged honest prices.

From our very first haul, we've been driven by one simple belief: every job deserves white glove care, whether it's a single couch or a full estate cleanout. That commitment has earned us 300+ five-star reviews from families and businesses throughout Salem, Swampscott, Beverly, Lynn, Marblehead, and beyond.

When you call The Junk Heroes, you're not calling a franchise, you're calling a company two brothers built from the ground up and still run, with a crew of friends who haul alongside them, and we personally stand behind every job we do.

We do this by the book. We carry $2M in general liability, a $1M umbrella policy and $1M in commercial auto coverage. We are USDOT registered (USDOT 8843043), our drivers hold DOT medical cards, and we hold commercial accounts at the disposal facilities we use, so every load ends up where it is supposed to. What We Take: Piano Removal

The ones people ask about: we do take paint, chemicals, motor oil, tires and car batteries. They are quoted separately because they need special handling. Mattresses, TVs and monitors are disposal-banned in Massachusetts, so they go to a specific recycler and carry a separate fee. The only things we turn down are asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, and anything leaking or still smouldering. See everything we take.

Piano Removal FAQs

Do I have to take the piano apart or find help before you get here?

No, neither one. An upright leaves whole: it goes onto a dolly, it gets strapped, and we put enough hands on it to keep it under control on the way down. You do not unbolt the legs, you do not pull the fallboard off, and you do not have to ask a neighbor to hold one end. On a grand there is real disassembly to do and it is still ours, not yours. The only thing that helps is the path: roll the rug back, unlatch the storm door, and tell us when you book if the stairway has a turn in it, because a turn changes how many of us come.

How does a grand or a baby grand come out of the house?

In this order. The lid comes off first, then the music desk, then the legs one at a time with the case supported, then the lyre and the pedal box. Once it is that far down the case goes over onto its side, gets strapped, and goes out edge first, which is the only way a case that wide clears a normal doorway. We bring the straps and the dolly and we do the taking apart on site, so you are not left with a piano in pieces waiting on a second visit. If it has already been apart for years in a basement and what is left is a case and a box of legs, say so, because that is a shorter job.

How much does piano removal cost?

A piano is one of the items priced separately rather than by cubic yard, which is exactly how the pricing page lists it, and the $120 minimum still applies. I am not going to print a figure here, because the piano is not what decides it. Weight and access are, and access means the stair count, the turns in the stairway, the width of the narrowest doorway and the carry from the room to where the truck can sit. A spinet on a ground floor ten feet from the driveway and the same spinet on a third floor with two turns are not the same job. Send the two photos, the piano and the path out, and you get a number, then we confirm it in person before we start, and that is the number you pay. If the piano is part of a bigger clearout, tell me and we will quote the whole estate cleanout on one visit.

Is there a piano you would turn down?

Yes, and you will hear it from me before we start, not partway through the job. If the only route out means somebody gets hurt or your staircase gets wrecked getting it there, we will tell you no instead of trying it. That is the same line we hold on heavy furniture. The other thing worth saying plainly: we do not rehome pianos, we do not appraise them and we do not tune them. A piano that goes on our truck is leaving as disposal, so if yours is still worth something to somebody, sell it or give it away first and call us when it is time for it to go.

How Much Will This Cost?

Pricing is based on the volume and type of items. We always provide a free, upfront quote before any work begins, no surprises, ever.

  • $120 minimum pickup
  • $80 to $100 per cubic yard
  • About $70 a yard when it is light and easy to reach

For a very small job close to our Salem base we can sometimes come down to $80 to $100, so it is worth asking. See the full pricing page.
