There are two kinds of basketball hoop, and the work is completely different. A portable hoop stands on a base filled with water or sand, and nothing moves while that base is full, so emptying it is the first thing we do on site: the water gets drained out, the sand gets shoveled out. Then the backboard comes off, then the pole, then the empty base, and the whole thing leaves in pieces on the same visit. An in-ground hoop is a pole set in concrete, and there you have a choice. We can cut the pole off at grade so nothing is left standing, or dig the footing out with the pole still in it so there is nothing left under the lawn either. You do not need to drain it, unbolt it, or dig at it before we get there.

Where it all goes afterwards is straightforward. The pole, the rim and the hardware are metal, and the metal comes out of the load on the way: scrap goes to Turner Inc in Lynn rather than the transfer station. The backboard comes down first, before the pole moves at all, because a full sheet of acrylic or glass still bolted to the top of a pole is the part of this job that goes wrong, and the backboard leaves with the load. There is one caveat. A hoop bolted to a garage wall or to the roof edge can come down where it is safe to reach it, but we do not patch the wall or the roof afterwards, so plan on the lag holes, the filler and the paint being your end of it. And anything structural is a demolition contractor's job rather than ours. On price, a hoop on its own is usually a $120 minimum job, and the two things that move that number are the sand in a portable base and a concrete footing dug out of the ground, both priced by weight rather than by the cubic yard.
